Surrender is a beautiful principle. One most spiritual seekers will nod to with reverence.
But if you’ve ever been in a season where nothing made sense, where the clarity dried up, the guidance got quiet, or the next step felt like a cliff… then here is something you might know:
Surrender isn’t always enough.
At least, not the kind that’s been glamorized.
Most people imagine surrender as floating peacefully down a river. Letting go and trusting the current.
But what happens when the river goes dark, underground or over a waterfall? Or at least when it feels like that’s what surrendering will lead to?
In those moments, surrender feels more like submission.
It feels like your soul is putting you in a spiritual jiu-jitsu submission hold.
This won’t sound glamorous, but sometimes your soul wants you to submit. The ego may see it as witness, but that’s one of the most powerful expressions of your sovereignty.
If you’ve ever practiced a martial art like jiu-jitsu, you know the moment I’m talking about. When you're caught. There's no escape. Your options are tap or pass out.
And in a strange way, spiritual surrender sometimes looks like that. It feels like your ego is forced into submission.
In these moments, you're not surrendering to a fantasy. You’re submitting to your path. You’re saying: “I don’t get it… but I trust it. I wouldn’t have chosen this… but I choose it.”
This week on ENHEARTENED.
This week on the heartcast, I sit down with Lorie Ladd for a wildly honest conversation about this kind of surrender.
We explored:
The difference between faith, free will, and divine timing
The burnout that comes when your soul asks more of you than your ego is ready for
Why the inner critic sometimes speaks with a “spiritual” voice
And what it means to be led by something greater, even when it wrecks your plans
This episode will meet you at the edge.
Episode 17 of ENHEARTENED with Lorie Ladd is live!

I love the distinction you make between surrender and submission. It makes me think of the importance of taking action but surrendering to whatever happens as a result of our best efforts and then of course making a plan from there. Little by little. Thank you. A thoughtful piece of writing.
Thank you
