There are so many things we do to avoid any form of ridicule.
Taking ourselves way too seriously is one of them.
I am aware that for many of us, we equate it with a sign of maturity. After all, who doesn’t like the feeling of having their shit together? Please do not forgive my French.
Pun intended :). (PS: did I use this expression right?)
How was that for a tiny dose of “unseriousness”?
Seriously though, I think we push it a bit when it comes to the expression of what is the most true within us: our authenticity, our craft, our gifts.
We can take them so seriously that we make them sterile. There is very little aliveness left in them. We strip them of the human factor.
It’s as if you sanitize your skin so much with rubbing alcohol that it starts to irritate you. It burns. And something that was supposed to maintain cleanliness is now attacking life itself. Can you relate?
That’s how compulsive we can be about keeping it together and being taken seriously.
What do I mean by that?
You try to make sure that all your ducks are in a row, to the point that you don’t even express your truest nature anymore, especially if there is any chance that you may get it wrong or be misunderstood.
The reality is that maybe your ducks don’t even want to be in a row. Does that sound right?
Have you even began to scratch the surface of just how weird you really are?
The reality is that underneath all of that, there is often a deep seeded fear of humiliation and ridicule.
In other words, the thought of being potentially humbled without your consent may terrify you deeply.
This is when the desire to be taken seriously can hinder your expression and fuel self abandonment.
Where am I going with all of this?
I truly believe that trying to take yourself too seriously has killed more brilliant ideas than expressing them imperfectly ever will.

Over the last few years, I have come to the conclusion that the most meaningful things in your life are also the areas where you need to cultivate deeper humility.
without that grounded sense of humility, it’s easy to lean into self abandonment.
This requires liberating yourself at a deep level from the grip that the fear of humiliation has on you.
