Here is a message I don’t think I’ll ever stop championing…
You are not afraid of being seen. We ache for it. We crave it. We literally pay to be seen—we call it therapy or sacred community.
You might have said to yourself many times, “I’m afraid of being seen.” I know I have.
And I’ve held space for countless others who have said the same.
But here’s what I’ve come to believe, through personal experience and deep work with others:
What we fear is not the visibility itself. What we fear are the consequences we’ve attached to being seen and that we sometimes still expect from the world around us. Humiliation, alienation, rejection, loss, persecution…
These core fears that keep us fragmented. They are not irrational. They are encoded in our nervous systems from past experiences—both personal and ancestral.
So of course we hesitate. Of course we hide. Of course we protect.
But here's the truth most people don't say out loud:
Repressing your light is one of the most painful forms of self-abandonment.
In fact, it's often more painful than repressing your wounds.
When we repress a wound, we’re hiding pain we hope to heal. But when we repress our light, we’re denying our essence.
We’re turning our back on the part of us that is radiant, powerful, intuitive, joyful, creative, bold, and wise.
What led me to the work of shadow integration was the profound desire to undo the hidden forces that hindered my radiant self. And that’s a continued practice.
When that part of you goes unexpressed for too long, it festers—not into shame, but into a subtle grief. A grief for a life you could’ve lived. A grief for a self you never let the world meet. A grief for a self you never let yourself fully embrace.
That’s why this work matters.
Being seen isn’t about performance.
It’s not about parading yourself on a stage, collecting accolades, or proving anything to anyone.
It’s about no longer betraying your essence to stay safe.
It’s about no longer outsourcing your belonging.
It’s about recognizing that being seen is a homecoming.

Xavier, thank you for putting things so succinctly!
May I add one dimension? Apart from the potential external consequences, there are also internal consequences. Once you decide to step into who you really are, you got to go through with it. There is no crawling back into the comfort zone.
I feel like I’m mostly afraid to be rejected for who I truly am, which is much more painful than to be rejected for the persona I show when I feel insecure. Rejection is such a primal emotion conjuring up a primal fear of abandonment of the group. Something that would have killed us when we still lived in groups. I kind of respect that part of us, that tries to keep me “safe”. She’s so doing her best!
